"Don’t forget to smile!"
"Don’t forget to smile", something I was reminded of every day. There was never a day that went by that I didn’t see the kids and staff without a smile. Their smiles and laughs are contagious, and I am thankful I got to see a glimpse of the joy they bring to this world. After hearing some of the students share their stories and learning about what they have been through and at the end of the day they choose to rejoice and praise the Lord through it all, it was encouraging to hear. Spending 2 months of my summer in Kenya was one of the best decisions and biggest blessings. It's hard to fully explain the laughter and joy I got to be a part of, so I hope these pictures will show that.
My first friend in Eastleigh was John, but I called him JD. The first time we went to Eastleigh JD insisted I sit by him, and he wanted me to tell him everything about me. So I did. But he also shared his story with me. And I learned a lot from him. JD has been through a lot, but what I have learned is that he is God fearing, filled with wisdom, and he's a fighter. The more I got to know JD, the more my heart broke for him and for the things he has been through. But I fully trust the Lord has a huge plan for JD and his future. The last time I saw JD, he asked me when we would see each other next and I said, “Honestly, I have no idea,” but he immediately responded with, “It’s God, He knows.” I get to rest in the fact that I don’t need to know all the answers to the questions I have, but I get to trust in the Lord and the plan He has. And I am thankful I got to experience JD’s smile.
So many things to say and so much that I have learned. The joy of the Lord is overflowing and abundant in this place. The Holy Spirit is powerfully moving throughout Kenya, and being even a small part is something I will cherish and carry with me for the rest of my life. I pray these relationships will be a part of my life for many years to come. I thank God for this life-changing experience and the time I got to spend in Kenya!
