WHAT WILL I DO IN EASTLEIGH?

Eastleigh, a section of Nairobi located on the East side of town, is where most of MITS’ outreach occurs. Whether it’s walking bases or helping out at the Eastleigh Centre, we’re glad you’re here and certain you’ll change someone’s life—and it just might be your own.

Mothers, Girls, Boys and Babies programs
  1. If you are interested in observing or teaching a class at the Eastleigh centre, talk with Mbuvi. This is a meaningful way to glimpse the transition from street kid to student at Kamulu.

Base visits
  1. A base is a spot where people living on the streets meet and live.  People at your base are your family and there is a strong sense of loyalty to one’s base. A base can be an empty building entrance, an alleyway, or underneath a tree.
  2. If you participate in the daily base visits, expect to spend 2-3 hours walking around Eastleigh with members of MITS staff and interacting with street children.
  3. Have a short talk or your favorite verse ready. You will likely be asked to share a message of encouragement or hope with those who live at the base
  4. Wear closed-toed shoes and loose pants (women over 30 should consider wearing a long skirt).
  5. Don’t carry anything with you into the streets. You will be able to lock up bags and valuables at the Eastleigh Centre.
  6. Photography is possible at some bases, at the discretion of your guide

Eastleigh weekly schedule
