CHILDREN OF MITS TEACHING/TUTORING INTERNSHIP
LOCATION
Kamulu, Kenya |
TIMEFRAME
12 months plus |
BACK STORY:
When MITS first started hiring staff, most of them were young, post-college singles with a desire to teach and mentor street kids through our program. Over the years, those young singles have turned into married couples, who turned into parents. The children of our staff are growing up in a rich faith community and a purposeful ministry environment. It is very important that they also receive a quality education. Due to the "catching up" & rehab nature of the curriculum in the Learning Centre and Skills Centre, it would not be appropriate to enroll the children of our staff in classes with our students. Another solution is necessary.
There are many local primary schools, where children of our staff are currently attending, but they stop at the end of 8th grade. Currently the only options for additional schooling are boarding schools, where the students would be away from family for weeks, even months on end. It is our vision to provide local high school education for the children of our staff. We intend to do this with a combination of online curriculum and an in-person teaching/tutoring intern.
DESCRIPTION:
The vision of this internship is to be a teacher, tutor and mentor to children of our MITS' staff. Every week day, you will attend chapel with the entire MITS community. You will then spend the rest of the day working with various age levels, from ages five to thirteen. The subjects and curriculum will be supplied by the Kenyan Department of Education. Your role is to help the children master their subjects so they can pass the required national on-line exams given each year. While not manditory, interns with either a teaching background or current elementary or secondary education majors are preferred. If you like teaching and mentoring children and want to make a difference in young peoples' lives this rewarding opportunity will interest you.
All MITS interns are expected to work 30 hours each week. If your duties do not add up to 30 hours of work, please make yourself available to our MITS staff for additional work assignments.
