Our Kamulu campus is about 45 minutes' drive outside Nairobi. There is no street address for the campus, but if you are taking public transportation, the stop to request is Matunda Stage.
The Learning Centre is where our classrooms are located and where we feed students lunch. In addition to several classrooms, the Learning Centre contains a library, computer lab, cafeteria, and several administrative offices. Across the street from the Learning Centre is the Girls' Compound, which has beds for 50 girls and features a brand new dormitory, a newly improved kitchen, library and study area. Several of our female students are also young mothers, with infants or young children living with them. The young moms have their own private house in the Girls' Compound with space for the kids to run around. Two female MITS staff members live in the Girls' Compound and serve as dorm parents. Adjacent to the Girls' Compound is a plot of land with 3 homes on it. One is the home of Francis Mbuvi, our head administrator, and his family. Another is the home of Robin & Irene, both staff members, and their family. The 3rd is the Girls' Intern House, which has space for up to 5 female interns. Near the Learning Centre is our property where many of our staff members have built houses. We call this neighborhood MITSville. Among the homeowners in MITSville are: Charles & Darlene, Jackton & Millie, Joel & Tira, Victor & Angie, and Laurent & Eliza. The M House is also located here, which is our primary visitors' residence. With 4 bedrooms, a kitchen & living area, the M House is comfortable for groups of visitors up to 15. The Boys' Compound can house up to 36 students on a seven acre property where they have four dorms, a basketball court, a water well and The Tower, where single male visitors or married couples may stay. Pens for our animals (cattle, goats and chickens) are also located at the boys' compound, along with three acres of farm land under dripline irrigation, where we grow tomatoes, kale, bananas, beans and other vegetables. Several MITS staff members live at the Boys' Compound and serve as dorm parents. |
Adjacent to the Boys' Compound is a multi-purpose building where we have daily chapel. The multi-purpose building, called the Octagon, is where the Kamulu Church of Christ meets. Next to the Octagon is our soccer field.
Also on this property is the MITS orchard and the Children's Centre. Our children's program is run by MITS staff and is large enough to accommodate 12 children. This nursery school is exclusively for pre-school aged children of our students and staff. Another property is the "20 Acres" located about a mile's walk from the Learning Centre. This is where our Skills Centre is located, which includes the woodworking shop, tailoring shop, catering school and salon training classroom. The 20 Acres also has dormitories for 16 upperclassmen boys and some of our staff members, as well as several acres of farm land where we grow corn, bananas and other vegetables. Ready for a virtual tour of the boy's compound? Allow some of our MITS students to walk you through their stomping grounds.
