Depending on the time of year, you might also live with other interns. You will attend chapel and our staff meeting each morning and go about your day in constant contact with the staff and students.
The Storyteller role is part photojournalist and part media communications manager. Here's how that plays out:
- Photography: Great media hinges on great imagery. To that end, one of your primary roles is to authentically capture moments of life at MITS—in the classroom, on the soccer (we call it football in Kenya) field, in the village, in chapel, and the moments in between. Every month, you'll cull and edit your photos down to an album of 100 images and load them to our SmugMug account. You'll use these photos for your social media posts and we use them to keep our website and print promotional pieces looking snappy.
- Social media: You will utilize MITS' Instagram and Facebook accounts to tell the story of life at MITS—what's new, what's coming up, who we are, what we're about. You will also engage with our followers by sharing the love and making sure the conversation goes both ways.
- Email: You will collect content (news, stories, photos) and then use MailChimp to organize the information into a cohesive newsletter which goes out to our subscribers on the first of each month.
MUST HAVE:
- Digital SLR camera
- Laptop and photo editing software (such as Lightroom)
- You will have access to free wireless internet in your living quarters in Kenya
- Experience with (or willingness to learn) MailChimp, our browser-based email manager
HELPFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Use and understand other social media platforms such as Twitter, Snapchat, etc.
- Any amount of design background or interest
- Design-related computer programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
EXPECTATIONS:
- You upload 100 fully edited, high-resolution photo files to our SmugMug account by the 1st of each month. The majority of these photos will be content of your choosing, but sometimes they will be special projects, such as a school-wide picture day or event coverage, as assigned by Cecily or other MITS staff.
- Using your photos and experiences, you will write and send the MITS monthly newsletter, to get the word out about happenings in the streets, around the school, and with our graduates.
- Using the photos you shoot and the words you write, you will post twice weekly to the MITS Instagram account and twice weekly to the MITS Facebook page.
All MITS interns are expected to work 30 hours each week. If your weekly duties do not add up to 30 hours of work, please make yourself available to our MITS staff for additional work assignments.

"MITS is spilling over with incredible and uniquely individual stories of love, hope, wonder, and endurance and it was truly an honor to spend my summer as a witness to these stories and to be trusted enough to share them with the world. Through my internship, I was able to grow not only as a photographer and a writer, but also as a person profoundly dedicated to making each person feel heard, respected, and valued. I highly recommend applying to this internship if you are an adventurous and creative person committed to accurately and honestly portray all of the amazing things happening every day at MITS."
