Packing List

Coming to visit MITS in Kenya? Below is a suggested packing list for a typical visitor coming on one of our summer Meza Trips.

CLOTHING:
-Laundry machines are available.
-MITS is a school, and visitors are encouraged to dress in a manner that fits a school environment: modest, clean, and comfortable. Feel free to wear loungewear when relaxing in your guest house!

  • Tops: t-shirts/comfortable tops (no tank tops)

  • Pants: jeans, comfortable trousers, and loose pants. Leggings or shorts can be worn inside the house, but not in front of staff/ students.

  • Skirts: need to be to the knee or below

  • Dresses: need to be to the knee or below

  • Pajamas

  • Underwear

  • Socks

  • Shoes: 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of closed-toed shoes (hiking boots are not necessary), 1 pair of shoes that can get muddy

  • Sweatshirts and jackets (USA summer is Kenya winter, so you will experience cooler weather).

  • Rain jacket

  • Church outfit (skirt or dress for women; pants and polo/button down for men)


TOILETRIES:

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste

  • Deodorant

  • Shampoo/conditioner

  • Shower soap

  • Razor

  • One towel and washcloth

  • Any over the counter meds you like to have on hand

  • Malaria meds (if you choose to take these)

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Bug spray

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Sunscreen

OTHER:

  • Sunglasses

  • Water bottle (the tap water in Kamulu is safe to drink. Please purchase bottled water everywhere outside of Kamulu)

  • Plug adapter and/or power converter (Kenya is on a British plug pattern and 240 voltage). Read the fine print on your battery charger to see if you need a converter.

  • Journal, pen and Bible

  • Backpack or small travel bag for day use

  • Spending money: If you choose to purchase any personal items or souvenirs, you will need to bring your own spending money. Credit cards do work most places, but check with your bank.


OPTIONAL:

  • Hat

  • Drink mix powder

  • Camera + battery charger + spare memory cards

  • Reading materials or Kindle for travel days

  • Headphones

  • Snacks (protein bars, crackers, dried fruit, etc)


YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING:

  • Bedding/sleeping bag

  • Please avoid bringing valuables like expensive jewelry, computers, etc. We take security very seriously, but if you don’t need it with you, leave it at home!


EXTRA ITEMS FOR SAFARI:

  • Dramamine (if you get motion sickness)

  • Malaria meds (if you choose to take them)

  • Soft luggage bag (15 kg or 30 pounds)

  • This is what you will use to pack for your safari. This is required by the safari company
